24-Bit Dailies in a 16-Bit World

During the Fall of 2017, I spoke with some of you asking about a fix for video engine failures in Pro Tools running on a PC with the new Windows 10 (Creators release). No one knew of any solutions at the time.... I had also combed the internet looking for postings related to the issue; again, to no avail. Our resident AVID Tech in our department at CSUN tried everything suggested on the AVID site; and even our Pro Tools master instructor & textbook author could not solve it.

Video files that used to run under QuickTime no longer worked. Codecs were up to date, QuickTime was up to date. But Pro Tools kept indicating "video engine failure" and inability to recognize codecs -- even though these same exact files used to run flawlessly prior to Windows 10 (Creators upgrade). I tried using different programs to convert older files to DNxHD, which should have fixed things, But even they did not play.

On January 25, 2018 -- we launched a new version of this site, operating from a newer software platform. The content and layout are pretty much the same; but the machinery under the hood that makes it all work has all been updated.

We are calling attention to this upgrade in the event that a few of you who recently registered with us during the final phases of this upgrade (Deember to mid-January) might possibly encounter an issue when logging in. Should that happen, please email us as soon as possible and we will get it taken care of.

Now – why did we upgrade the site? Because we wanted to provide you with:

• A better mobile experience. The whole website now reformats much cleaner on smartphones and tablets, meaning you can access FilmTVsound from anywhere!
• Better site performance. Pages load faster, and animations look slicker.
• Better site security. With all the hackings in the news we made your information security our top priority and went “under the hood” to make sure everything from the ground up is more secure.

As anyone in the industry will tell you: maintain your gear and keep it current. Websites about audio gear are no different.

Every now and then, we go through our shelves of audio gear and find some gems that are too useful to just be taking up storage space. I have gotten older; and admit that these days, I rarely go out on commercials or major shoots. A little bit of cable network stuff just to stay in practice, but the mainstay of my income is from teaching and consulting. So I no longer need to maintain an excessive inventory of professional toys. (And if I do need something extra that I don't own, I can borrow it or rent it.)

AVID recently released version 12.4 of Pro Tools, and like many of you -- I went ahead and attempted to upgrade. I encountered some serious problems, at least in the Windows version. Be forewarned!
