695So how much does a Production Mixer earn? For the benefit of our readers, I have attached a PDF copy of the current rate card for the sound union.

Please note that these rates are subject to change without notice, and there are many variables involved in determining which rates apply under which conditions. This information is not meant as a definitive guide for Producers or payroll managers; but merely to provide students and novices a sense of what goes on in Hollywood.

Tips to understanding the rates

First, check to see that you are using the rate card for the correct annual period. Rate increases apply depending on the dates. Note that the rateson the first pages of the document are for 2018. You have to scroll down to find the rates for 2020 amd 2021.  You can also find the current union rates by using Google search (Local 695 publishes them on the internet).

Is the employee being hired on a daily or weekly basis? Different rates apply.

Is it studio or local based, or considered a distant location?

Is the employee considered a journeyman (experienced with seniority) or apprentice (new hire)?  Note: the Union assigns these designations, not the Producer.

Some "low budget" productions fall under special Tier provisions, meaning lower salary bases.

Minimum Call is the basic 9 hour workday (8 hours straight time plus 1 hour at overtime 1.5x), exlcuding lunch. Under union rules, you do not hire anyone for less than 9 hours, even if you only require them for less than 9. Kinda hard to make a living if you only get paid for a couple hours!
