IATSE Local 695 has graciously offered to share their quarterly publication with our students and members of the sound community. Local 695 is the labor union representing production and post-production sound recording for the Hollywood industry,
and establishes the standards for wages and working conditions that even many non-union sound people use as a guide. What a lot of people outside of Hollywood may not realize is that our Local 695 is also active in the area of Education & Training, and publishes an excellent and highly informative magazine.

Note that this particular cover story deals with how the Netflix dramatic series, House of Cards, utilizes visual special effects during post production to "bust" the shot and digitally remove boompoles and microphones from the frame. This technique is currently used on wide, static shots -- where the need is the greatest, while the technical difficulty of this digital removal is at its simplest due to the locked off nature of the scene. Think of it as being similar in nature to a wipe transition between shots, except that they are "wiping" between the full duration of the shot and a short sampling of the same framing but without the booms. That is an over simplification of the process, but it gives you a rough sense of what they are doing.
Many thanks to Richard Lightstone, Eric Pierce and Mark Ulano for generously sharing their publication with us.
